Windows 10 makes it easy to add a second monitor using familiar commands available in Windows 7. This will bring up a menu with a list of options. In my case, I need some additional screen real estate so I will go with the Extend option. Extend will place a copy of the Windows desktop on the second monitor with its options separate from the main monitor. In the example below my second monitor on the right.
Configuring Settings If you have unique requirements, you can adjust these using Display Settings. Right-click the desktop and select Display settings. It’s big and expensive, but it just might be worth getting. The changes are mostly under the hood, and will likely please some power users, though they leave plenty to be desired. Alongside the new laptops, Apple also launched its first standalone external graphics unit for the MacBook, designed in collaboration with video tech company Blackmagic Design.
And if you’re a power user, it’s definitely an upgrade you should consider. How good is Apple’s Measure app at actually measuring things? The Blackmagic eGPU is a pretty hefty, oddly shaped gadget designed, first and foremost, for people who crave more graphics power than their MacBook Pro can muster. If you can stomach the price, however, the Blackmagic eGPU is a pretty awesome upgrade.
This means you’ll probably be able to connect your MacBook to this baby and hook up all your “legacy” USB peripherals to it, be it a mouse, keyboard, printer or a secondary monitor. You can also take your standard MacBook Pro charger and put it in your travel bag, as you won’t be needing it at your desk anymore. Notably important to me was the support of my two 60 Hz DisplayPort 1. After a month of ownership, despite significant effort, I had not successfully used my two monitors concurrently.
During that month, the dock was flatly unable to power up the two monitors concurrently. Now, based on a combination of the latest patches and a bit of trickery involving turning off the built-in display by closing the lid while leaving the computer on, I can power the two monitors concurrently, but only at 30 Hz. Back then, I wrote about 30 Hz televisions that were cheap enough to warrant their use by programmers despite the lag.
Nearly two years later, and with two high-end Philips 60 Hz 4K monitors on my desk, the idea of 30 Hz is an anachronism. Today, the SurfaceSupport Twitter account linked me to a support page concerning connecting a Surface to an external display , which contains the following chart: I’ve highlighted the relevant row, but to put it succinctly:
